In the Arts Centre in Accra each and every time our symbols are made with a lot of love and attention by Kofi. I just got back from Ghana and managed to make a nice photo shoot with Kofi our woodcarver in Ghana.
In Ghana everybody gets their name by the actual day of the week they were born. Kofi is the name for a boy born on a friday.
From dusk until dawn Kofi is busy carving djembé's. Each djembé with it's own special illustration.
But before the instrument itself is being made out of one single log of wood our symbols are carved out of this log. The Adinkra symbols are known all over Ghana, I made a selection of twelve of them..
Whether it is the small Duafe symbol or the larger one Akoma, each and everyone of them receives the same kind of attention. After the carving, the symbols are painted in a nice dark color so they match our bags.
Meanwhile I am back in Holland and the symbols found their place with all our African beauties.
For everyone there is a suittable symbol. Special for yourself but also as a special gift for someone else.
Bye bye,
Juliët
